We are looking for the right balance of alignment and autonomy at work which creates the best possible out come collectively and individually. Alignment means people know what the outcome of their jobs should look like but Autonomy means that people are not told how to do their jobs. Do the people you work with have the right balance?
Here’s 3 things you can do for each person or team in your business to get underway with alignment and autonomy:
1. Clearly Identify the Current Snapshot of the 3 Most Important Responsibilities of a given role or team.
These do not contain numbers and they are not tasks. They tell someone what they are working towards without focusing on the tasks to get there.
2. Be very specific about what the outcomes should be for each responsibility- what would success look like, what do you want the end result to be?
These could be and mostly are numbers or stats but not don’t have to be.
3. Have the measurements you will use for success easily accessible.
When something is measured – it improves performance.
When measurement is reported – it improves performance dramatically.
When reporting is public – it improves performance exponentially.
Questions I often get asked are how often do these change?
What if I know of and have tested tasks that I know get the results, cant I tell someone to simply do the task I know works?
Who measures the success?
